Conservation in Action

Join us for Conservation in Action! Ever wondered how priceless objects survive centuries to be displayed in a museum? Conservation in Action invites visitors to see history being preserved live. In this interactive pop-up lab, families can watch professional conservators carefully restore and protect items from the upcoming Royal Marines collection, gaining a unique insight into the delicate balance of science, skill and patience required to care for historical treasures.

Visitors will have the opportunity to speak directly with the conservation team, asking questions about the objects and the techniques used to bring them back to life. Learn about the materials, the wear and tear that time creates, and how conservators plan every step to ensure authenticity is preserved while preparing each item for display.

Get up close using microscopes and magnifying tools to see details invisible to the naked eye; from fine stitching and metalwork to painted surfaces and aged materials. Discover how modern science and traditional conservation methods work together to repair, stabilise and protect artifacts.

Whether you’re fascinated by military history, curious about museum science, or just love seeing behind the scenes, this experience offers a rare glimpse into the work that keeps the Royal Marines’ heritage alive as the team prepare for the grand opening of the Royal Marines Experience this summer.
