Imagine what it would be like to live and work beneath the waves. That’s exactly what you’ll experience when you step aboard HMS Alliance, a real World War II-era submarine. This immersive adventure gives kids the chance to explore narrow corridors , marvel at the tiny bunks sailors slept in, and see what life was like for those who spent months underwater. Next, explore the Royal Navy Submarine Museum and learn all about our other submarines, Holland 1 and X24.

Did you know that Royal Navy submarines used to fly Jolly Roger flags? You can see the earliest surviving Royal Navy Jolly Roger, and learn more about their incredible history. Finally, don’t miss the Science of Submarines, where you can learn all about the engineering behind these amazing vessels.

2. Are you ready to dive deep?

3. Can you take on the gross and gory?

Let’s face it, children love a bit of gory history – and Portsmouth Historic Dockyard has you covered. The HMS Victory, Admiral Lord Nelson’s flagship during the Battle of Trafalgar, is not just a majestic ship; it’s a place where you’ll learn about the gruesome realities of life at sea.

The ship’s surgeon had one of the toughest (and often grossest) jobs on board, treating injuries from battle in the most unimaginable conditions. Head down below deck to discover how sailors endured gruesome wounds and how the surgeon had to perform amputations, often without proper anesthesia. The stories of bravery and survival will captivate young imaginations, especially those with a taste for adventure and a bit of a stomach for the gruesome details.
