The Story of the Mary Rose

After 437 years beneath the Solent, Henry VIII’s legendary flagship has returned to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. Built in 1510, the Mary Rose served for 34 years before her dramatic sinking in 1545. Following her recovery on 11 October 1982, the ship underwent a meticulous 30-year conservation process to stabilise her timbers for future generations.

Today, the hull stands reunited with thousands of authentic artefacts that reveal the raw, personal stories of the crew who lived and died on board, a tribute to the divers and scientists who achieved the impossible.

The show takes you on a journey from the tragic sinking of the Mary Rose over 400 years ago to her incredible recovery in modern times.

Archaeology and the Conservation of the Mary Rose

Step into a Tudor time capsule, surrounded by over 19,000 genuine artefacts, the largest collection of its kind in the world. Walk among interactive exhibits and expert guides who bring the daily lives of the 500 men (and one dog) who sailed aboard vividly to life, from what they ate to the smells that filled the ship.

You’ll leave with more than a Tudor story. The Mary Rose changed how the world excavates shipwrecks, and her legacy still shapes underwater archaeology today, a discovery that starts the moment you stand in front of her hull
